Scott Miller has released more than a dozen albums with his bands Game Theory and the Loud Family, and his music has been described as "a cross between Alex Chilton, James Joyce, and the Electric Prunes" (Stereo Review) and "smart, funny, and instantly memorable" (Rolling Stone). In this book, Miller writes about each of the past 53 years in popular music-1957-2009- via countdown song lists, blending the perspectives of a serious musician, a thoughtful critic, and an all-devouring music fan. Miller not only tells you why he loves particular songs, but also what was going on in the musical world in which they competed to be heard.

Music What Happened? Scott Miller 9780615381961 Books

I'm something of a Scott Miller fanatic, own pretty much everything he ever recorded, and even wrote a blog about him recently. I bought this book when it first came out, and it's excellent. Miller knows music, and he writes just as intelligently and entertainingly ABOUT music as he wrote actual lyrics. The book is basically a year by year listing of what he considers to be the best songs of each year, starting with 1957, and ending with 2009. (You can actually download 2010 and 2011 from the Loud Family's website - the Loud Family being one of Scott's excellent, excellent bands.)

Sadly there will be no more updates, as Scott passed away this past April. Those who are not familiar with his work will never know how huge a loss this is for the music world, and those who never met him will never know what a huge loss it is just in general.

RIP, Scott, and thanks not only for all the beautiful songs, but for this highly entertaining and fascinating book, which any real music fan should own.

Music What Happened? Scott Miller 9780615381961 Books Reviews

a really outstanding book of its type--aside from having impeccable taste in pop, scott miller writes very knowledgeably about jazz, rap, etc. a bit of a homer--his buddies chris stamey, brendan benson et. al. aren't quite as essential as he'd have you believe--but generally very fair-minded. much less crotchety and elitist than christgau--he'll tout a great top-40 hit just as avidly as some artsy hipster piece. the author died recently; this is afine legacy.
Miller writes the book I'll bet most musicians would love to write (god knows I would, if anyone cared!). Where I got my influences and Why they are important.

His knowledge of music is impressive in places. One would have loved to see Jim Ellison of Material Issue live to write a book of his own about influences, too. Both gone too soon.

It's your typical review book- you will not agree with him on everything and you will wonder why certain bands were left out.
The concept is simple a cult songwriter and lifelong music fan selects his favorite songs and tells you about them. It could only be as bad or as good as the writing itself, and Scott Miller delivers.

As fans of his bands Game Theory and The Loud Family know, Scott managed to be funny and touching and hyperintellectual all at the same time, in song form no less. Fortunately this book is densely packed with those same traits. No less impressive than his keen insights or his command of language is his ability to make you laugh out loud in every chapter, if not on every page. Unlike a lot of critics, he really is a joy to read.

Music What Happened? is essentially a crash course in pop music history, with an instructor whose friendliness and humility and wit make the experience a total pleasure. I was very saddened to learn of Scott Miller's death in 2013, but at least he left us this along with his large body of weird but terrific songs. And as a PS (and/or PSA), you should really check out those songs -- the Loud Family record "Interbabe Concern" is a good starting place.
Do I agree with every pick? Gosh, no. I wouldn't include any Steely Dan song were I to undertake the same project. And I'd rather have an a** whuppin than ever hear Bohemian Rhapsody again. But that's me, and this is he. My friends and I don't agree on every musical point, but I nonetheless enjoy discussing the merits of the music I love with those friends as they do with me. That's the point. Scott Miller loves music. That alone makes this worth reading. And what a thrill to learn that I'm not the only one to notice Ringo's SIGNIFICANT contribution to George Harrison's Something. Those little commonalities are fun to stumble upon, and there are lots of those. Scott Miller is brave and true. He includes Abba's Knowing Me, Knowing You and makes no apology for it. I like that in a person. He never dumps on an artist just because it's fashionable to do so. He writes intelligently, sometimes overly so (again, MY opinion), but what can't be called into question - ever - is his sincerity. I wish he were still around, still writing and recording, because I'd line up for each offering.
